I've been thinking about dressing up as Duchess Ravenwaves for some time now at Halloween.
The one thing that'll make most difference in the outfit is the wig though, I already did some sketching of the outfit but there's a bit more artistic liberty to be taken there. It'd be quite nice if the wig was veeery thick and long. So, I was thinking of combining at least 2 (somewhat) full and long wigs (made ouf of synthetic hair of course), and then add synthetic hair extensions to that. As it appears the longer the wig the thinner the volume on it. Suffice to say, I don't think I'll be doing a lot of dancing that Halloween, since just moving around with a huuuge wig is risky in itself , not to mention very warm
Does anyone have experience with braid extensions? Is it easy to convert them into weave extensions by oneself?
As I found very long braid extensions and was hoping I wouldn't have to use the somewhat shorter and actual ready made weave extensions, 'cause then the overall wig would need a bit of a trimming to not look weird with two definite layers showing.
Wow
@ Mira
That is an EPICALLY AWESOME DRESS!!!!
WOW..........just WOW.
I really want to go as Duchess Ravenwaves for an anime convo next year. My friend's mum can sow, so hopefully she can help me make a dress!!! *curses at my lack of sowing ability* gah
Re: Wow
Thank You
I definately recommend making it a twopiece. So much easier getting in and out of it all. And loooads of petticoaty goodness is good too! And you might want to start hunting for a wig or two already, sewing two together isn't that tricky. Hopefully you could also get a better trim on them too, as the more layered effect would be the best as opposed to the cut off straight.
Duchess Ravenwaves Costume Pics
As seen and posted about in another forum topic, I'm hopefully soon done with my Duchess Ravenwaves dress.. and wig!
I've added a few more pictures to the image set for the Duchess Ravenwaves dress that show the so far finished dress and wig. The set of images can be found here!
What I've done is sew two wigs together, one 60" and one 40". The 40" is actually the one with bangs, so it is the lower wig that served as base for the longer. And then I not so elegantly trimmed off some of the top 60" wig so they both have about the same length.
To get a truly flowing and full look, it would be ideal to add even more hair by adding separate locks (preferably in slightly different tones to help give even more volume), but the wig is quite heavy as is already. And the extension hair I got is more tangly than the synthetic hair that is in the wigs. But she shall see if I can perhaps get such wefts less tangly with the use of hairspray or something..

Nice to hear! It would have been a dream to do the dress in sheerer organza fabrics.. similar to another Duchess Ravenwaves costume I saw pics of that was made by Carolann Voltarel (see the last post in this thread). I was on a budget though, so.. but I could always remake the costume, or do another character
Yepp, not been a lot of posts lately, despite the anniverary and all, but soon there'll be a new DR wallpaper
Sorry doublepost
Sorry doublepost
A while ago I found this..

Re: LLL Wig
Oh, cool site, and nicely done wig! I hope she'll finish that outfit soon too!
Slightly shorter than I would've expected, but it is tricky getting the volumes one'd want for real, and then curls tend to shorten the lenght too. But yeah, thinking of getting some darkblue and darkpurple streaks to add to the Duchess wig, as it should help add more seeming volume and also make the wig appear less "flat".
And making own pixietails, seems very tricky. Making one out of clay as it seemed she had done was a good idea though, saves a lot of hassle with sewing one. But I actually I pondered making a suitably sized "clip on" Comb Gnome for the hair, and one to keep in my hands, ie a disguised purse
I am feeling way lazy on this point, so I won't be making it all from scratch, I think I'll simply kidnap a few suitably small/large plushies and ahem re-skin them and add a tail. I wonder what kind of plushie comes with similar ears to Comb Gnomes though, mutilating an elephant plushie seems kind of over the top...
And oh, that Godiva wig looks very nice and full maybe I should go for that one as base instead, and then try and find wefts or braid extensions to add to that. And teeehee, also browsed Doctored Locks site for extensions, but did find actual wefted 30" ones on eBay. Decisions!
Maybe Manon can add a Costumes / Dress Up section in the FanQuarter part of the site, where fans can post pics or links to costumes and so
EDIT: Aha, I see from this post that she did finish this outfit, and did pose for pics too, here
Inspiring and impressive
hope this helps...
And you can go to Walmart and buy your own extentions. Just telling you this cause I'm a living LLL and living Amalthea! heee
Re: eBay
It's eBay where I've found most stuff so far that I had in mind of buying, except for a not so curved weave needle
